Captain Marvel introduces Lawson during a flashback sequence in which Carol Danvers is captured by the Skrulls and put into their memory-scanner machine.
That makes Lawson a person of interest when Danvers crash-lands on Earth. Finding Lawson is especially important to Danvers, not just to help the Kree win the war but to help her learn more about her previous life on Earth Lawson is also the figure the Supreme Intelligence takes the shape of when appearing to Carol. But in a massive reveal, Lawson turns out to be a Kree scientist named Mar-Vell who was actually trying to help the Skrulls find a new home. The Skrulls are actually refugees.
Mar-Vell found this out, and subsequently decided to help the Skrulls. While at Project Pegasus, she was trying to find them a new home, and some of her efforts hinged on her harnessing the power of the Tesseract — the object that we know from previous Marvel films is eventually revealed to be a powerful Infinity Stone.
The First Avenger is set in the early s, and its plot revolves around the Red Skull tracking the Tesseract to Norway via Norse mythology and stealing it in hopes that he can cultivate and harness its energy to win World War II.
Eventually, Nick Fury comes to possess it. This is where Captain Marvel starts to fill in some of the blanks. In Captain Marve l, we learn that the Tesseract was somehow possessed by Mar-Vell in and perhaps some years prior — the year she died and that Carol Danvers was captured by the Kree army. In the Thor scene, Fury asks Doctor Selvig — a scientist working with Jane Foster and a witness to the events of Thor — to research the Tesseract in a secret underground lab.
However, unbeknownst to Fury, Loki is scheming in the shadows:. Thanos eventually assembles the full Infinity Gauntlet, snaps his fingers, and poof — half of all life in the universe disappears.
The problem is that Danvers, in many of her early appearances, was kind of written as a hapless girlfriend. Captain Marvel introduces puts a new spin on this story by making Walter a Wendy. Goose , a Flerken , swallowed the Tesseract while Danvers led her former allies on a diversionary chase for the empty lunchbox. The Tesseract being shown to Erik Selvig.

Thanos had already been seeking the Tesseract in order to retrieve the Space Stone , and Loki promised to retrieve it from Earth and give it to him in exchange for his army.
Loki revealed his plans to use the Tesseract to enslave and rule over the human race, stole it, and escaped. The energy from the portal destroyed the facility, while Loki took the Tesseract to an undisclosed location.
In response to Loki's threat, S. Nick Fury also wanted them to trace the Tesseract as it was emitting small amounts of Gamma Radiation that only Banner and Stark would be able to trace. While Loki was dealing with the Avengers, he ordered Selvig to begin working on a device that could utilize the Tesseract's full power to create a portal that could transport the Chitauri army to Earth. Selvig and Loki later put their plan into effect and opened the portal above Stark Tower in New York City , which unleashed the Chitauri upon the city and an immense battle ensued.
Thor takes the Tesseract back to Asgard. Eventually, Black Widow used Loki's Scepter to reverse the effects of the device, shutting down the Tesseract and closing the portal. Following the invasion, Thor returned Loki and the Tesseract to Asgard. Though the World Security Council disapproved, Fury defended his decision to allow Thor to take the Tesseract to Asgard, saying that humanity was not ready for the Tesseract's power, much to the council's dismay.
After his return to Asgard , Thor gave the Tesseract to Heimdall. The all-seeing Asgardian used the Tesseract to repair the Bifrost Bridge so the Asgardians could once again protect all of the inhabitants of the Nine Realms endangered by the Marauders. Later, the Tesseract was locked in Odin's Vault so no one could use it again without Odin 's permission.
Thanos crushes and destroys the Tesseract. They killed half of the Asgardian survivors and captured Thor and Loki. Loki acceded to his demands, though he managed to stall long enough for Hulk to ambush Thanos.
But Hulk was swiftly defeated. Afterward, Ebony Maw retrieved the Tesseract and presented it to Thanos, who proceeded to effortlessly crush the Tesseract in his hand and placed the Space Stone in his Infinity Gauntlet.

Loki steals the Tesseract. While the entire hall argued, the older Stark instructed Ant-Man to go inside his younger self's Arc Reactor and disable it, causing him a cardiac arrest as a distraction.
As the Stark collapsed, Ant-Man kicked the case containing the Tesseract away from them, his actions being noticed by Loki. As the version of Stark attempted to flee, he was struck by the alternate Hulk , causing the case to open and the Tesseract to skid across the floor, stopping by Loki's feet.
Noticing that the agents surrounding him were preoccupied with Stark's heart attack as well as the sudden appearance of an angry Hulk, Loki took the opportunity to seize the Tesseract, using the Space Stone within to create a wormhole and escape confinement. Iron Man steals the Tesseract from After failing to acquire the alternate version of the Tesseract, Tony Stark and Scott Lang retreated to their rendezvous point, informing Steve Rogers of their failure.
Rogers inquired as to whether there was another place in time where they could safely steal the cube, only to be reminded by Lang that they each only had one Pym Particle left, which was only enough for the trip home. As they lamented in their current situation, Stark remembered that Howard Stark and Hank Pym both worked at Camp Lehigh in New Jersey around April 7, , meaning that both the Tesseract and a supply of Pym Particles would be stored there.
Arriving in an alternate , Stark successfully infiltrated the base with Rogers, and using his glasses to search for a gamma signature was able to locate the Tesseract, placing it within a discarded briefcase.
The Infinity Stones are inserted into the Nano Gauntlet. After successfully transporting the past versions of the Infinity Stones to the main timeline, the Space Stone was extracted from the Tesseract and placed within the Nano Gauntlet.
