The father of the Fitzgerald children and a career firefighter. Brian often serves as a foil to Sara. Yet Brian also escapes into his work to avoid dealing with the hardships surrounding his family.
He can be kinder than Sara, but by the end of the story Sara proves to be the emotionally stronger of the two. The oldest of the Fitzgerald children and the most delinquent. Despite his tough exterior, Jesse is in reality a vulnerable and sensitive character.
He uses his destructive behavior to mask a fundamental feeling of inadequacy. Jesse cannot save Kate, and he has never been able to forgive himself for that. In addition, he has often felt ignored by his parents, who focus their attention almost exclusively on Kate, and he acts out in part to gain their attention. She has struggled with cancer nearly her entire life, and she appears to have come to terms with the fact that she might die.
The reader sees glimpses of the girl Kate could have been, but for the most part her battle with cancer defines her character. You're really good. You know, I've seen your commercials, right? I mean, who hasn't? And I always thought that you were some sort of headline-seeking hack. But you have real talent. You almost had me believing that you cared about Anna. Campbell Alexander : Funny, I was about to say the same thing to you.
Jesse Fitzgerald : Jesus Christ, Anna, just tell them. Andromeda 'Anna' Fitzgerald : You shut up. Jesse Fitzgerald : Tell them why we're here. Tell them what we're doing here in court Andromeda 'Anna' Fitzgerald : [cuts in] You promised me that you wouldn't do this! Jesse Fitzgerald : God, you people are so stupid! Andromeda 'Anna' Fitzgerald : [shouts] You promised! Jesse Fitzgerald : Kate wants to die! Yeah, not perfect. Also, he pushed himself hard to be independent and successful—so did Julia, that's why he likes her—but unfortunately, he cannot rationalize the fact that being in a relationship with someone does not necessarily take away their independence.
He worried that by being with Julia that "she would no longer be a truly independent spirit" 7. Campbell starts to change when he sees himself in his young client, Anna. When he tells her that he "stopped wanting to be like [his parents]" 7. As Anna becomes independent despite being so closely intertwined with her sister's disease, Campbell, too, realizes that he can keep going despite having his own disease.
He ends up marrying Julia in the end, and he, Julia, and his dog are probably living happily ever after. Wait, dog? We have to mention one of Campbell's defining characteristics: his service dog, Judge. Judge always follows Campbell around even though he won't admit exactly what Judge's service is. Leaving the courthouse, Campbell and Anna are in a car accident and Anna dies.
Campbell decides to donate Anna's kidney to Kate, who lives. Later, Campbell and Julia get married. Happily sort-of after?
